Before Christ, there were the Jews who were monotheistic in a world of paganism and polytheism. Over the centuries, God prepared the Jews for his coming by prophecy. But He came in a way many of them did not expect -- as a Divine Person. Many of them, particularly the Pharisees, did not recognize Him as Emmanuel. He allowed them to put Him to death in accordance with His plan to affect justification of the entire human race by vicarious atonement to the Father.
Prior to His crucifixion, he establish a teaching, authoritative Church with Peter as the head. He promised he would be with His Church until the end of time. Five centuries after the beginning of the Church when it had its 37th head of the Church (Pope), the Church gave the Bible to the world.
Over the years, heresies came and went. The Catholic Church continued. Then there was the great Schism in 1054 A.D., the Catholic Church continued. Then there was the Reformation in the 16th century, which coincided with the advent of printing. Sadly, due in large part to abuses in the Church and the failure to impart the Catholic faith to people, many Catholics fell away from the faith and began following religions started by men (Luther, Calvin, Zwingli, Henry VIII, Smyth, etc.) These religions have been dividing and dividing ever since until now we are left with over 60,000 Christian denominations originally splintered off from the Catholic Church. Much of this confusion has been the result of "Sola Scriptura", a non-Biblical teaching that says we can know what to believe and how to act by reading the Bible alone. (If true, then it would mean that the illiterate for the past 20 centuries and the Christians of the first five centuries didn't know what to believe nor how to act. Ridiculous)
Over the centuries, the culture has become less concerned with God and more concerned with creatures, particularly self. As a result, we are now living in a post-Christian pagan world. You see it all around you. People (particularly women) are objectified. Children are sacrificed at the altar of the god of choice in abortuaries every day. Many people are their own god and recognize no authority but themself.
If one thinks we live in a Christian nation, he is living in a world of fantasy. A significant portion of an ever-shrinking group of Christians, including many undercatechized Catholics, think abortion is okay, fornication is okay, divorce and re-marriage is okay, pretty much whatever "feels" good. This attitude is one of presumption upon the mercy of God of those who know better. The rest may have never been taught the truth and someone is going to have to answer for that to Christ. Nevertheless, the terms to describe society today are subjectivism and moral relativism.
It used to be that people talked about God. Today most people forget about God.
