  • The people in Salem are really friendly. The pace of life is casual, slower than a big city but faster than rural living. A beautiful town for walking or bicycling! If you need a place to sleep for a few days, the YMCA downtown is conveniently close to everything, and well managed. It's called the "one hour" city. It's one hour to the ocean, one hour to the beautiful central mountains, one hour to the big city of Portland to the North, one hour to the hippie-dippie town of Eugene to the South. As the state capital, the main industry is government. Seems like half the people work in some government-related activity. Most technology or corporate jobs are up in Portland, where the job market is about five times bigger. Don't miss the Oregon Country Fair! http://www.oregoncountryfair.org/
  • Salem, as you know is the capitol of Oregon, and it is a growing little city! In this part of the state we are in the middle of a Temperate Ranforest, and it is very beautiful, and green, because of>>> yep, you guessed, the rain! I am in Corvallis, home to Oregon State University! The people are very friendly, so you should be happy, here! But, like anywhere else THESE days, it pays to be careful, all of the time!! Good luck! And welcome to Oregon!
