I would have to say that because the group members liked that name and agreed on it.

I can't find a definitive answer, but I did find that an earlier incarnation of the band was called Strontium 90:Police Academy (presumably after the film?), which may, then have gotten shortened to Police when the lineup firmed into what it is now.

thanks for your answers...but still i cant understand how can they have such a controversial name....i mean at that time the police and the gov. in general was a big topic
