It's a declaration of faith. A statement of witness. The Arabic word comes from the triliteral root sha-he-da meaning he witnessed or he bore witness. The root word occurs in the beginning of HQ 3:18 which starts with "Shahida Allahu annahu la ilaha illa huwa..." The meaning of the full verse, as translated by Marmaduke Pickthall is "Allah (Himself) is witness that there is no God save Him. And the angels and the men of learning (too are witness). Maintaining His creation in justice, there is no God save Him, the Almighty, the Wise." The shahada, or statement of witness, is uttered in Arabic and comes in two parts. The first part is "Ush ha doo ullaa ilaaha illullaah" meaning 'I bear witness that there is no deity (worthy of worship) except Allah". The second part is "wa ush ha doo unna Mohammadun 'ubdoohoo wa russooloohoo" meaning 'and I bear witness that Mohammed is His servant and His messenger'
