Since it is a post-1996 vehicle, it uses OBD-II and a lot of information can be obtained simply by plugging in a diagnostics tool (or counting check engine lamp flashes after jumping the appropriate pins on the diagnostic connector. Specifics on how to do that would be in a manual like Chiltons or Haynes, which you may even find at your local library). Randomly swapping parts without getting the diagnostics codes is quite foolish these days.
