A few years ago I compared every insurance company I could find, and found Traveler's insurance to be the least expensive for me at the time (I was a single, 30 yr old woman with a decent driving record). Last year, I searched again, and found Esurance was fairly cheap as well. You may try those, as you can get free quotes from their website.

It depends what country you are in. I found Linea Directa to be the cheapest company to offer first class cover in Spain, yet I never used Direct Line in the UK.

Years ago, someone carrying bare minimum insurance was speeding on ice, hit a guardrail, became airborne and landing on top of a truck being driven by a friend of mine. My friend was crushed from the waist down, but he survived. The doctors started with the things that were life threatening, then they fix his legs and pelvis, then the minimum insurance ran out, and my friend was left with an unrepaired leaking bladder that requires him to wear a diaper. I never want to do that to someone if I make a mistake on the road. I never want to be responsible for leaving someone maimed with no recourse. Ever since then, I have carried over the minimum, at least on injury for the other person. I would never forgive myself if I was responsible for destroying another person like that.
