  • Oh, this means trouble for my friend in Maryland who's parents are two chimneys... Yikes... Maybe this will be a good reason for them to think twice before ligthing up.
  • I've been considering the same thing SABO. You might find this interesting. There are many online sites that sell them cheap but there is some risk. http://couponing.about.com/od/cigarettes/a/cig_credit.htm Also, you might find the nearest Indian Reservation to you and see what the driving distance is. They are tax exempt and typically sell cigarettes for $2-$3 per pack.
  • What will the price be in Maryland including the additional tax taking effect? Perhaps some state to state transactions could be worked out between fellow AB'ers? It's not an answer, just a suggestion. ;)
  • Well, here in Michigan we've had high cigarette taxes for some time. I quit about 10 years ago (when they were 2.50 pk) and I believe now they are $5.50 pk or more here. I know there was a lot of stuff on the news about people ordering from online and getting stuck with HUGE fines for not reading the small print on the websites. I don't remember the whole thing as it was a few years ago, but it seems that when you purchase them online, you still have to pay your state's taxes or something like that. I don't know how it works, but people were getting either charges on their credit cards that they weren't expecting for the taxes, or the websites were sending the info to the state and the state was sending out bills for the tax or something like that. It was a big mess for a lot of people. You'd be better off going to a neighboring state that sells them cheaper. Edit: I just read Cowboys' answer, and what I was talking about is in the link provided in that answer!
  • Didn't the Kennedys make their fortune running rum? The drug lords might start selling cigarettes instead of cocaine. LOL!

  • I'm not sure if the government has cracked down on them but my Brother in Law is part of the shinnicock tribe in NY and he lives on the reservation. Well his brother started a smoke shop on the side of the road and sold cigarettes for ridiculously low prices. Heres the catch. He didn't have to pay the so called tax because part of the profits benefited the tribe and the shop was on tribal land against a local road. Well one day he realized, "I should be selling these things online too, That way I get more business then just who drives by in a car?. He made himself and the tribe a pretty penny but the last I heard the ATF was cracking down on him because of the sales over the internet. Nothing majorly criminal but they are looking into if he can sell them online tax free. See when he sells them from the smoke shop the shop is on trible land so he's in the clear but for the online customers he shipped the orders from the manufacturer to the client. The ATF didn't like that because they never touched tribal soil. He loop holed it for some time by having the orders shiped to him then to the client, and keeping maticulous records of it but I'm sure the government will change the law again to benefit itself. Google it. I don't know the website to do it but if you google Shinnicock and Tax free cigarettes I'm sure you will find it.
