How do you feel (or what are your experiences) being the 3rd/5th "wheel" (or the odd person out) in a group?

I am odd in any group. I rarely feel out of place. That is unless I was invited out of pity.

It's awkward! I don't like it ... especially since the reason I'm the third wheel in the first place is probably because I had nothing better to do because ... no one else wanted to invite me anywhere. THEN! I wind up off to the side somewhere, thinking about all of this and getting myself all upset. Bleh! But. I'm a little nuts, so. What do I expect, right? =)

If they are my really good friends, then fine. But if they are new, casual friends, it can be pretty awkward.
