They were not prepared for the grooms arrival. They repersent unbeleivers. It is a warning to be always prepared for the coming of the lord.

I would have to say that all the women were believers. According to some that should mean that they were already saved. However, they let their relationship with Christ dwindle, and were not waiting for the bride groom so that when he came they were not in a state of readiness. I believe that means many things, but mostly that they were lapsed in their prayerlife, as well as in their daily walk with God. They did not have enough oil, and so they came too late to the feast and were denied entry. The sad thing is people ignore this parable because they do not believe that it applies to them. This is not a parable about believers and unbelievers, this is a parable about the Church itself. All within the Church are believers, yet not all will make it to Heaven when the Day of the Lord comes.
