No, its not at all healthy and worse it is only a temporary fix for what is most likely a hefty problem. Most likely you gained that weight by too many fats and sweets in your diet and to little exercise. By starving yourself (punishing yourself) you will not develop the correct habits you need in order to reach a healthy (for you) weight and maintain that weight for life. Ideally one should seek to lose 5 pounds of fat per month by moderate reductions in food, either by moderately cutting back on sweets (sugars, carbs) and fats (margarine, bacon, mayo, whole milk, blah) or adding moderate exercise to ones life, like walking around the block more often, parking further from the store/office door, adding a light cardio like swimming, jogging, biking OR doing both. Starving the body does not work. And here is why. For millions of years our species evolved in a "tough" world. That world didn't (and actually doesn't) have a lot of food. we competed for food (hunting, gathering, fighting with others of our kind, other species) for limited resources. Often individuals in our species would go hungry. To stave off death our bodies developed many ways to survive the famines. Starving your body with just water and a couple of shakes causes the survival instinct to kick in. The body will immediately start stripping as much energy and nutrition from what little it is getting. IF that means you do have a big meal your body will take all of it, packing on the rest as fat (the alternate fuel source). If that doesn't work then the body will start reserving its fat and start devouring its own muscles and organs, sparing the usage of fat for the organ that needs fat (the brain). In 50 days time your body will be in high survival mode, that means anything you eat will immediately be stripped and as much as possible will be stored against the next famine. Your body has no idea that there is food there or that your special diet is over, it will act and react as if you are living in an area where there is little to no food, and for up to 6 months it will be in survival mode. Yes 50 days from now you will weight less, however you would have lost crucial muscle mass, would have most likely stripped your body of race elements, most likely will have weakened your immune system and will be ripe for gaining pure fat (no muscle back) faster than you gained fat in the first place. This is why people who do use starvation diets to lose weight usually end up packing on the pounds faster and even in greater amounts. More fat, worse health, it becomes a vicious circle for some who never seem to have the "will" to keep the weight off. It has nothing to do with your will, it has much to do with the will of millions of years of evolution. Other interesting things take place, such as you lose muscle mass, water mass and not actually the fat you seek to take off. You weaken the immunity system, and if you have this on again off again diet routine when you finally DO feed the need and take in less calories (by reducing sugars and fats in your diet, replacing with low calories volume foods to fill the stomach, high in minerals and vitamins to feed the bodies need) you will discover that your body will take up to 2 years to actually respond to that diet and find its balance. Crash diets and New Years Diets usually fail because they are unreasonable, expecting to lose too much weight too fast, or taking unusual steps to attain that body. A "good" diet is found in the book BodyStat How to reset your Fat thermostat :http://www.allbookstores.com/book/0670859559 Don't rush out and buy the book, go to your local library and check out a copy. Read it. It will explain in far greater detail what I just said. Once you have read it return to the library and look at all the books on the same subject. What is nice about this book is that it offers you reasonable ways to change your lifestyle in order to reduce your body fat percentage. It also explains in layman's terms the differences between people and what a "normal" percentage of body fat is for a person. It will also allow you to actually eat more food than you might be now, but it will be healthy food, it will be food that is high in volume but low in calories. It is food that will feed the need of the body, leaving you eating six smaller meals per day staving off hunger (The first symptom of starvation) which will have a huge impact on your being able to keep the weight from returning. In essence the body not only developed this survival instinct, it also developed a shut off point where it does not gain mass and does not pack on fat if it believes that food is plentiful. The greatest problem with the modern diet is that it is high in fat and sugar and most of us do not walk that far anymore. The second problem is that most of us pass on 3 solid meals a day, or we wait until we are near faint with hunger to eat - by that time the body is set to survival mode and converts as much as possible to survive the next famine. BMI charts, height to weight charts, weight scales are rough measurements which are in and of themselves simple guides which DO NOT apply to all people. You want to lose 75 pounds, you may not need to. In fact you may actually need to gain weight - no not fat, but lean muscle mass which will in turn burn more calories. Muscle looks better because it takes up less volume, fat on the other hand does not. You should seek to lose 75 pounds in about 15 months - 1 1/4 year - and that is pressing your luck. You should see your doctor and insist on a body fat percentage test. Not a weigh in, not a BMI - you need to know your body fat percentage and figure out what is healthy for you, your gender, age, height, body type, and genetics. Then speak with your doctor about the alternatives to starvation diet, fad diets and fast diets. Set a long term goal to reduce your body fat percentage and increase your lean muscle mass. This means that instead of losing 75 pounds you might need to convert 25 of that to lean muscle mass, meaning you will lose 50 pounds but have a better shape.

And do you wonder why your daughter has bulimia? Be a good role model for her.

Before doing any diet, you should check with your doctor first. You are not giving your age or your health history...that is all important before you jump into any diet. If all you are having is water and 2 slimfast shakes a day.....no that is unhealthy. Also as soon as you get off that and start eating food again you will start gaining weight. Exercise and cutting back your portions of foods, staying away from junk food, stay away from trans fats and carbs is a healthier way of dieting.

It's not safe for anyone..even if you lose it you will be left with large tracts of loose skin that will not seem to fit your body....get onto a more sensible diet/exercise regime if you really want to do something about it.

These questions you are asking are following a very disturbing pattern...are you OK?

No, absolutely not! First, you should speak to your doctor. I did that before I started a diet. Fast weight loss is not healthy or safe. Crash diets like you describe don't last. Reducing fat, portion control, drinking lots of water and getting some sort of exercise is the safest way. A healthy lifestyle...not simply a "diet." I have safely, slowly lost 80 lbs on Weight Watchers and kept it off. I've also lowered my bp and cholesterol as well. I would guess if this is how your sister lost weight, and she goes back to "normal" eating, she will not keep it off.

Try weight watchers and exercising! The hard way is always the best way when it comes to losing weight. In the longterm you'll keep the weight off.

Did we not learn anything from that poor woman(brain fart can't remember her name but I hope someone else does) that fell into a coma because she starved herself on liquid diets such as tea & water. She was the one that sparked a national debate over if they should let the government step in or the husband but they wound up taking her off life support & starving her to death. Shriver maybe was her name but starvation aint the way to go hon.

In order to drop one pound, you have to burn 3500 calories more than you consume. At 75 pounds that's 262,500 and divided by 50 is 5250. So you would have to BURN at least 5250 calories a day. So you would have to run 50 miles a day to drop that kind of weight...while not eating ANYTHING. Not only is that absolutely impossible, you'd kill yourself just trying. It's only recommended to lose a maximum of 2 pounds per week, unless under the strict supervision of a doctor.

Nope. That's how to get sick and then fail in your mission to lose weight. You need you a work-out pal. My friend weighed 320 when we started working out. We work together. I had just found out I was pregnant and needed to take regular excercise so we decided to do this together. I am heavy but not as heavy as she was. Notice I said "was". We've been at it for 3 months now. My friend works out every day. I manage to do it 4 days a week because I get rather tired from the baby. She has lost 70 pounds. She eats a very good diet. She is vegan so it's mostly veggies and tofu. She does not restrict the amount she eats. It's been amazing to see her body emerge from beneath the waves of fat. She is looking marvelous. She is dedicated to regaining her health and was amazed at how well it responded to reasonable treatment. She started having regular periods again. Her skin cleared. She started sleeping better and best of all, her clothing hangs on her like a tent now. All from sheer hard work and determination. Me? Well I have had to watch myself put on a few pounds but most of them are baby and some are my new muscles. We do 30 minutes of cardio followed by weights for another 30. The we shower and head into work. So find yourself someone who wants to get healthy and work out. And start excercising. Once you get past that first week or so it will become part of your life. You will be so pleased with the results. Skip the cheats and the quick-fixes. There are none. Dieting just brings failure and misery. Work for it! You'll love it.
