  • It is their way of getting rid of the nitrogen-containing waste products that result from natural protein metabolism. Mammals (e.g. humans) get rid of this waste in the form of urea in the urine. It takes a lot of water to dissolve the urea. It is believed that birds and other non-mammals try to conserve water by excreting the nitrogen-containing waste product in the form of uric acid. This is the white stuff. Birds only need to lose small amounts of water with the uric acid, compared to the amount lost in our urine. So it is actually not their poop, but their pee.
