Not much is known about his origin save that he was a GL long before he crashed on Earth. It is known that around the mid-point of his career, he encountered a demon who foretold his future: that he would die horribly due to a power loss in his ring just when he needed it the most. The demon was lying, of course, but Sur's faith in his ring was shattered. He spent the rest of his career traveling from point to point in his sector via starship to conserve the energy in his ring.
