I like Barq's and IBC. A&W tastes a bit weak to me, but I have to give it mention because they were very generous in providing me with a keg for my wedding. Root beer floats at the reception!

I prefer the "microbrews" like 1919, centered in New Ulm, Minnesota, or Shprecher's, from Milwaukee. Both are excellent.

Of the national brands, I'd have to go A&W.

I like mine smooth and sweet!

I've had a private label brand called Witches Brew sold in Salem Massachusetts. Aside from that there is a small soda maker called Simpson Springs Here in Easton Massachusetts that makes the absolute best there is.

I have to agree with the guy who runs the Root Beet Barrel, the webs Root Beet Review site. It's got to be Boylan's Root Beer. The publics #1 is Henry Weinhard Premium Draught Style Head Root Beer.

This is one of my favorite sites as I love birch beer and root beer. Check it out if you are looking for some new and better root beer. http://rootbeerbarrel.com/

Between those two, I like Barq's better. There is a GREAT rootbeer, however, called Dominion. You should try it. http://www.olddominion.com/ It's made a a little brewpub, but I'm pretty sure it's distributed nationally on a limited scale.

IBC Root beer is really good. They make a great Creme Soda too. Theres a restaurant in Ann Arbor, MI called Grizzly Peaks that makes their own root beer. Its a party in your mouth.

It's bottled/canned by Dr. Pepper Seven Up Inc. That probably has something to do with it. In regards to a secret ingredient, I would imagine so.

I think that both of these were a lot better in the past before they changed things, like what they used as a sweetener. I hate high fructose corn syrup. It's really ruined the soda industry. Give me great soda made with cane sugar any day.

But for a great root beer, I prefer Boylan's natural root beer. It's frothy, spicy and creamy rich. Not too sweet and full flavored. I found out about it from one of my favorite websites, Anthony's Root Beer Barrel. Ran across it many years ago when researching birch beer. If you are interested in reading about nearly every root beer or birch beer made, give it a visit:-)
