I haven't learned to drive although I do use automatic in arcade games. But I believe both are equally good, and it matters from who likes it and who doesn't.

I worked for my uncle the summer I learned to drive and helped make deliveries on a small truck with a standard shift. I hated it. I passed the test but I quickly went to automatic. I don't care for shift. Too much work.

I don't know which is 'better', but I prefer a manual transmission. I learned how to drive on an automatic.

I learn't on a manual transmission. I prefer manual for the speed and the money i saved on gas with a standard. I find automatic is a bit boring, but also fun to drive.

Learned in a automatic. Then lerned motorcycle manual trans Then stick car. A stick is fun to drive but for day to day I'll take an auto. At work I can get my stick fix. :^) My wife replaced her auto with a stick last year and loves it. (untill she gets stuck in stop and go traffic)

I had to learn how to drive with a stick shift because my first car, a 1959 Ford Galaxy XL, had a manual transmission. It was a must then to know how drive with stick shifts then. Cars with automatic transmissions cost a lot more than the cars with manual transmission.

I learned to drive in a manual, and I have one now too.

I have always driven manual, which is the standard in Europe for smaller cars. I greatly prefer it over automatic because you have more control over your car and it keeps you active and alert (although it becomes an automatic movement in the end). I must add that I have a very dynamic driving style and tend to take my car onto mountain roads for the sheer fun of driving. I find that automatic takes some of the fun out of it as well as skill. The only alternative I can think of is the DSG gearboxes from Audi and VW, which are semi-automatic and are incredible quick and fun.
