Turbo tax can assist you in filling out forms. In this aspect, it may be as good as a tax professional (since both will depend on the accuracy of the information you provide). However, an actual live tax preparer can ask questions about your finances/situation that a computer program cannot. They may be able to help you find deductions you might not have considered, and they can help with actual tax planning (for things like gift taxes, estate taxes, etc) that the computer program cannot. If you're single, with no children, one w-2, no deductions, no gifts to report, and (obviously) you haven't died recently, then turbo tax will be just fine. If you have anything making it more complicated than that, consider at least speaking with a tax professional so they can answer any questions you have, even if you decide to ultimately file the forms yourself using turbo tax.

The Turbo Tax computer program which requires a database of information that is dependent upon the user is only as helpful as the precision of the information that is inputted into it. If the user sets up the program correctly and is honest and diligent in their data entry Turbo Tax can be a very useful product and could possibly take the place of a professional tax preparer. Keep in mind that tax laws change every year and if your Turbo Tax program is not kept up to date you will not have this information which a professional tax consultant is supposed to have knowledge about.
