  • Tis is a means that by which software companies seek to protect themselves from piracy. When you buy a program what you are not buying an unlimited right to do as you wish with that program. The licence spells out the conditions under which you may use the software. To put it simply, the licence usually says (in legalese) that you may only install the software on one computer (sometimes they allow you to install on more computers) and that you may not provide copies of the software to other people. To do so, or to use an unauthorized copy that someone else have given to you, opens you up to a civil lawsuit for violation of copyright laws and the licence agreement. In practice, software companies don't really go after individual violators. However, if you setup a large scale operation to illegally distribute their softway, then be assured that they will come after you when find you.
