I always wondered if some guys thought they were 'too big'.

It can be. I have known guys with 9+ inches who say they wish they had a smaller penis because most girls can't take the whole thing. The end up having to spend so much energy during sex trying not to hurt the girl and only putting half of it in that they can never really get into the sexual act.
