You can do planks either on the floor or on a exercise ball. Planks are like push-ups except on your elbows instead of your hands. You hold that position for as long as you can. You will begin to feel shaky and the burn in your abs after 10+ seconds. Try to keep your lower back up or else you might strain it. Planks build ab strength and stability.

Find a good instructor and keep the tv workouts for extra practice once you have all the principles in place. It is easy to follow to a video and even a class and not be in a stable position. There is a lot to learn in your first Pilates lessons, breathing, engaging the core, correct movement etc etc.
