This is one of those moments to shine as a parent. Think of it that way. My stepson had this really bad right up until the age of about 7. Poor kid. Give your kid the tools to take care of him or herself all by him or herself during the night like a clean set of underpants, a dry sheet or towel to put down , etc. The bigger deal you make of this the longer it will take to go away and it will go away one day. Some kids are very deep sleepers and cannot rouse themselves to get up and pee. My stepson's mother made a huge deal about this, made her son feel bad about it and eventually bought an expensive gizmo to attach to his underpants that made this terrible bleeping sound when he wet himself. It must have cost her a fortune because when I accidently on purpose threw the thing away she wanted me to write her a check for 70 bucks which was likely to be twice what it cost her. I never did. 1 year later her son was over his issue.

my husband wet the bed, i think it was from all the psychological abuse he endured.... i supppose he outgrew it because the bed has been dry for our entire marriage. i dealt with things my own way, i sucked my thumb till i was 11

Believe it or not, its a pretty common condition and many kids go through it, myself included! I "wet the bed" up until I was 11 years old, and they still make a special brand of pull-up diaper called "Goodnites" for bed wetters. It's common, manageable, and not a big deal. And thats exactly the message you should send to children. Its not their fault, and they'll grow out of it :)
