If you are getting heads cut off, then you haven't adjusted your aspect ratio correctly. Check your owner's manual for instructions on how to do this correctly - it's sometimes just a button on your remote that you press until you get the aspect that you want.

Old TVs had a 4x3 aspect ratio - they were only a little bit wider than they were tall. Newer systems are 16x9 format - nearly twice as wide as they are tall. When a program is made, it can be shot in one or the other - but not both. So if you put material made for one format onto a TV that is in the other, you have three choices: "Box" - bars at top/bottom or at sides, depending on conversion, "Crop" - cut bits off at sides or top/bottom, or "Anamorphic" - Stretch or squeeze the picture to make it fit the screen, even if things look funny. So basically, you are falling victim to a technology change: either you are watching new tech material on an old tech screen or vice-versa.
