  • I don't think parents are too lenient on children with AD(H)D. I think if anything a lot of them are more strict on them in order to correct the problem. I think parents are often too liberal in giving their children medication. I think medicine is often an 'easy' way out and should only be used for more severe cases.
  • No doubt there are some parents out there who will allow their children to get away with bad behaviour because they suffer from ADD/ADHD but I am willing to bet there are even more parents out there who allow their children to get away with bad behaviour and have no condition. Parents of ADD/ADHD kids usually understand that they actually have to be a little harder on these kids than on normal kids. ADD/ADHD kids need very clear expectations of behaviour with consistent consequences. They find it much easier when the boundaries are very firm and clear, and in the end are a lot happier. However, there are a number of consequences that are not effective with ADD/ADHD kids. Consequences like grouding, removing priveldeges that dont happen for a few days, yelling, lecturing and spanking are not effective at all with ADD/ADHD kids. Parents will often not use them, not because they are being easier on the kids but because they are pointless. Immediate consequences that allow the child to calm down such as time out are more effective. Each child needs different kinds of discipline.
