I hate to break it to you, but you might have a third party memory card (weird colored ones), and those are known to be defective. You could always contact the consumer help hotline or try the geek squad at your local best buy.

I feel your pain. I LOVE that game, and have NEVER managed to make it to Disc 4 without SOMETHING screwing up. I literally bought a used copy, traded it FOUR TIMES, bought a NEW version... and THAT one screwed me. Damned up-down-grading. I miss the days when all you had to do was blow in the cartridge and smack the NES to make the blue screen go away.
