How do you powerslide in Mario Kart 64?

    Hold R while turning.
    You'll see white smoke letters coming off of your tires:
    V R E E E E E ...
    You're powersliding.

    Press the shoulder button to hop and hold it to slide. Still holding the shoulder button, you the tilt the analog stick left and right through the turn. The key is to wait for the sparks under the kart to turn a different color before tilting the stick in the opposite direction. Do this quickly enough, and you'll get blue sparks. As soon as you get the blue sparks, you can let go of the shoulder button and get a mini-turbo! You can even do multiple powerslides in one turn if your fast enough and get multiple mini-turbos.
    This is the key to getting superfast lap times. It might take a little practice, but it's not too hard once you get the timing down.
