Maybe unconsciously, but when asked if the name HAL was based on a one letter shift from the name IBM, this was denied by both Clarke and 2001 director Stanley Kubrick. In 2010: Odyssey Two, Clarke speaks through the movie character, Dr. Chandra, who says: "[u]tter nonsense! [...] I thought that by now every intelligent person knew that H-A-L is derived from Heuristic ALgorithmic".

That's what my biology teacher said . . . but apparently both the author of the book and Stanley Kubrick have denied it. I still think it would be funnier if it were.
