This is a good question because I don't think that people realize when they first get here that people here might not be who they present themselves to be. You should use a great deal of caution here, as you should on any other social web site! And even offline for that matter!!

The point in AB is not just to find people to agree with you. It's best to give points not just to those who you agree with and like their answers, but to answers which are well written and good thoughtful answers, even if you don't agree. Good answers don't necessarily bring big points. Don't let it bother you.

You can make lots of friends. You can make surprisingly deep friendships. All the usual caveats and warnings about dealing with human beings apply -- gossip, betrayal, grudges... all of that comes with the opportunity to be connected to others and enjoy the ride. Don't be surprised if people you trust turn out to be undeserving of it, don't be surprised by the speed at which gossip travels, don't be surprised that cliques form and grudges harden into rigid factions that wage war on anything they consider "the enemy". But if you keep showing up, and being yourself, and don't get too caught up in the nonsense, it's a great way to kill 12 hours a day :)

Be careful of people who act as the victim, and like to bait the situation.

Develop thicker skin and if you think someone is being rude ask them first if that was their intention because it might have been meant in jest and that is how misunderstandings happen and friendships are lost.

What you give out, in all terms, is what you will receive. This applies to kindness, points, sarcasm, rudeness, generosity, love, effort, everything comes back to you double.

There are going to be people that you dont agree with or that dont agree with you, but thats something you just have to deal with.
