  • That stat sounds stupid. Where did you get it? On May 11, 1996 (the worst day in Everest history) 9 people died out of 34 who climbed. That's just over 1 in 4. I'm pretty sure that it's not that bad every day. I could only find stats up to 2004, but at that point there were 2249 people who had successfully climbed Mt. Everest with only 186 who died. This does not take into consideration those who did not make it to the summit but did not die. Some modern estimates have placed that current mortality rate around 3-4%. Don't believe everything you read. Yes it is dangerous, but "one in four will die" is a lie. To answer the "why" part of your question: 'because it's there'
