Go looking and buy what stirs your heart and satisfies your eye. Don't let any snob tell you what is good -- you only learn by looking and searching. Study books with good color reproductions, not just famous artists but the people you never heard of before but whose work you like when you open the pages. I have been a professional painter of landscapes for over twenty years with gallery representation and the worst thing a buyer can do is buy something because someone who was supposed to be an expert told him or her to get it. You'll live with the art you buy so make sure you can look at it and walk inside of it not just for a glance or a minute but day after day finding something new to care about and discover inside. Sure there are some rules about design and composition, but it is the love of the visual experience that counts. Don't buy things that come out in multiple cpoies, look locally at the artists who haven't broken into the super big time and you'll find the best bargains among people who don't have gallery representation yet. Your eye and your heart will tell you what kind of work you want to invite into your home.
