1. Because it is part of the United Kingdom and on the same island as England. 2. Because the public schools in this country are failing to teach students many of the basics.

-
Many seem to have great difficulty with geography.
-
Not all U.S. citizens think that. Some are ignorant some are intelligent just like every other country.

In the US a national geography illiteracy reflects disinterest with the subject. Consider that the National Geographic–Roper 2002 Global Geographic Literacy Survey polled more than 3,000 18- to 24-year-olds in Canada, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Sweden and the United States. Sweden scored highest; Mexico, lowest. The U.S. was next to last. "The survey demonstrates the geographic illiteracy of the United States," said Robert Pastor, professor of International Relations at American University, in Washington, D.C. About 11 percent of young citizens of the U.S. couldn't even locate the U.S. on a map. The Pacific Ocean's location was a mystery to 29 percent; Japan, to 58 percent; France, to 65 percent; and the United Kingdom, to 69 percent. Are Young U.S. Citizens Americentric? More young U.S. citizens in the study knew that the island featured in last season's TV show "Survivor" is in the South Pacific than could find Israel.

I'm sure I read somewhere that the average American has quite a hazy view of their own country's geography, so expecting them to have a detailed idea of another country would be expecting a bit too much.
-
I'm a US citizen and I think Scotland is north of England and that they are both part of the United Kingdom.
-
I was in New York a few years ago... talked to a guy in a bar and he asked... 'I have a friend in Scotland called David McDonald... do you know him?' He was labouring under the impression that Scotland was a small town in England. BAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH !!!!!!

Geography is not emphasized in US schools.
-
because many English people still regard Scotland as a region of England, the tubes.
-
I am sure this is not true. However there are probably some ignorant people but not any more than there is in this country
-
I know that Scotland is north of England, that it's on the same island, and that they're both part of the UK. Does/did Great Britain=the UK? Is the name Great Britain still used?
-
Didn't know they did, but when you consider the size of the U.S. compared with U.K. it seems fairly immaterial, how many Scots could identify all the American states and districts?
-
cos americans are stupid...really stupid they dont know anything thats outside of a macdonalds.
-
Because most americans are ignorant. Most americans dont even know what the capital of canada is! Anyway, its not only americans I am afraid. If u go to some southern countries , especially old people from different generations, they might associate scotland with england too, they just get confused. I would say depends on the single person. Most people nowadays are educated so they should know. Americans though , they are known to be ignorant on geography anf history.
