  • Its probably from the ammonia in the urine that reacts with the chlorine in the bleach, that's my best guess.
  • The answer is that chlorine in the bleach reacts with the ammonia in the urine to produce chloramines -- NH2Cl, NHCl2 and NCl3 These cause eye and respiratory irritation. (I thought I'd found the answer in many web pages that claim that NaONH3 and chlorine is produced. But trying to find what that other chemical was called, I found there was no such chemical! So this is a very good question) http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/classic/F95205?thread=336742 http://www.hsesro.com/View_Article.aspx?id=48
