infectious disease of rabbits — a highly infectious, mosquito and rabbit flea or contact transmitted, generalized disease caused by myxoma virus which is very similar to the rabbit fibroma virus. It is characterized by swelling of the eyelids and a profuse, purulent ocular and nasal discharge, subcutaneous lumps 0.5 to 1 inch in diameter, especially on the head, and swelling of the genitalia. The case fatality rate with virulent virus strains is 100% and the morbidity in a closed rabbitry is usually more than 50%.

it was released here in Australia many many many years ago to try to wipe out the rabbit populations that were in plague proportions it had a great effect for a number of years but the rabbits in the end built up an immunity against it so a new virus was invented called the 'calissi'virus and realeased a few years ago

It's a terrible rabbit disease that killed most of my rabbits in 1974. It was horrible to see how fast and how awful their deaths were. The vet couldn't believe that we had it there in California but they think it came from the mosquitos in the area. I lost all but 3 of our 15 rabbits:-(
