It varies. I have seen numbers from about 1000 to 5000 hours of operation. The bulbs in projectors typically get dimmer with use, so some will want to replace them before the life expectancy. The projector manufacturers probably give a conservative estimate to make sure the bulb does not fail in the projector or give unacceptable performance, so the bulb MIGHT "last" longer, but I don't recommend pressing your luck. The same bulb in different projectors may have different life expectancy if the projectors use different lamp voltage or cooling (the way the bulb warms up and cools down can affect its life).

I dont have a projector, so i cant really give you a good answer. The best advice I can give you is to lower the projector brightness, and there fore the ambient light in the room, as low as it can get while still getting a good picture. Dont crank it down so low that you cant see it unless it's pitch black! (unless you have really thick curtains or no windows) Have you ever heard the saying "if you burn the candle at both ends, it will be brighter but not last as long!"? well its the same basic principal. Also, From what I've seen on projector's I've seen around, I believe that the bulbs slowly deteriorate until they become so dim they are bearly usable. I once saw a projected image that was really dark. I then noticed that "Please replace the LAMP!" was flashing in the lower right portion of the screen. I also noticed that there was a red light on the projector it self
