I dont know much about Republican terrorism against Britain, forgive me but what is it? :P I dont think "Americans" have done anything wrong, maybe certain people but its unfair to generalize.
-
Most Americans I know, myself included, realize that terrorism has been going on pretty much since time began. Sounds to me like you're asking a foreign policy question.

Blame the few who belonged to "clubs" who funnelled funds & arms to the IRA, not "Americans" in general. How would you feel if someone said they couldn't forgive the English for stealing Irish lands and being responsible for virtual genocide by famine.
-
Real Americans have been fighting terrorism since 1492 :-)
-
Everyone but politicians have been fighting since the revolutionary war that started this country! Just because we have a bunch of trained monkeys running our country at the moment doesn't mean we are all that stupid.
-
I agree completely! I grew up in London in the 80's and 90's during the height of the IRA activities. The windows in my house actually broke after 2 bombings. And the US funded these people!

blame the media. they like to mess with people's minds.

I'd like to think that most Americans knew terrorism was a global problem well before 2001. It apparently takes actions against us as a nation, to spur the World Police into action however. It's an uphill battle fighting ideals as opposed to a regular country with land and infrastructure to bomb.

Well, yeah, i do fing it annoying, but I also understand that it is not all Americans that think that, but the media seems to portray it as such...

Until something hits home, people (and we Americans are particularly prone to this, I think) don't personalize it and give it the attention it may deserve. The cyclone in Myanmar is a perfect example. Hurricane Katrina took 1800+ lives and the US still has a hangover from that storm. Yet you don't see American citizens up in arms demanding aid get to Myanmar citizens, you don't see them traveling distances to help in rescue and clean up efforts. And we certainly don't feel the toll of their dead. Irish terrorism is much the same thing. Certainly, most Americans were aware terrorism occurred in the world, but as long as it didn't affect us we didn't feel any direct response was needed. It is true that some Irish Americans have romanticized the IRA. Many Irish Americans support the cause of the IRA but not their actions. The truth is that violence should be a last stand and should never affect innocent people when possible. But for those US citizens who did fund the IRA's violent actions, perhaps they have now learned the lesson that terrorism rarely solves anything or progresses any kind of peace.

Who said terrorism started on 9-11? I'm American, & don't believe that. I further more do not support terrorism of any sort!

I see this question's been pretty well played out. I very much enjoyed the comments under slothmister's answer. At first I thought I was going to find a bloodbath of anti-US comments. But instead I found some enlightening information. I knew Irish Americans, like many Americans only a generation or two naturalized, sent money back "home" in this case to support the IRA and its people. But I didn't realize it was so prevalent. What I have to say here is a difference between the US and pretty much any other nation. We have literally thousands of subcultures. You name it and someone in America hates it, and someone else reveres it. It seems to me that it's something of a fad to boisterously proclaim your heritage (however little of what you claim is actually in your blood). Makes people feel like more than plain old American like everyone else. Much more common since discrimination and bigotry has been falling dramatically. It's no longer bad to be minority which was the feeling just a few decades ago.

Terrorism did not start on 9/11... it was shoved in our faces on 9/11.

Could I have passage to your universe? Many of us are well aware that terrorism has been around for a very long time. The problem was that many of our Conservatives refused to remember that the OKC bombing was committed by members of the Republican Party. I think Ireland should be Irish. But then, I don't feel that bombs are the way to bring it about. And it's not like Britain is pure as Driven Snow when it comes to the shit she pulled during her days of Empire. Opium Wars, Boer War, Black Hole of Calcutta.
