Pretty much anything tightly knit will do. It's really a matter of personal preference after that. I am not fond of cotton, I find it rides up and down in uncomfortable ways. Synthetics tend to stay in place better, for me.

depends on the purpose. do you absolutely need to keep dry or can you get some moisture in in return for thermal qualities and ultimately drying out?
