We recently brought a 32 inch LCD widescreen TV... why do we still have the black bar across the top and bottom of the screen when we play movies? we cant change anything in the settings

In the DVD disc settings itself you mean? That is possible. You should make changes in your DVD player for that. Although note that some movies which are widescreen are even narrower than the screen you have, that would justify you having those stripes. But if you feel the picture is squished, compact, you should change settings in your DVD players menus. Consult the manual to know where exactly since all DVD players are different :)
