Generally we are trained to change out barrels on the GPMG at between 250-500 rounds of sustained fire, but in combat conditions M-60's have been known to fire 10-12 belts of ammo before overheating. Overuse can cause jamming of ammo in the reciever, or in the barrel, cooking off of ammo in the barrel, and occaisionally M-60's have been known to "run-away" due to overheating of the sear mechanism and rolling-bolt mechanism.

well... in ideal conditions as often as stated above...it would be wise to conserve ammo even in the worst of situations to keep the barrel cool and operating as long as possible
