How can I tell if a search engine marketing firm is reputable?

    Check whether their keywords have top ranking for competitive keywords. If they cant get their site to top, how come they help you to get top ranking.

    If they tell you they GUARANTEE you a page one result on for eg Google, stay well clear of them and move on.
    Algorithms change all the time and nobody knows when or how. Basic SEO methods can always be used to improve your chances of good results, but can never be a guarantee. Also look at the competition - what if 100 businesses have a similar site and business to your own, and the SEO company is telling them all that they guarantee a page one result, when there's room on page one for only ten.
