  • I would probably stop resisting his delusions, and just let him believe what he wants to believe. He's your grandfather, yes? He probably doesn't have "open minded" on his resume, and is probably at an age where he's not looking to add it. It's appropriate for us to try to be for things like environmental protection, to make wise choices for ourselves, and to recognize that our actions affect others. But you can't control other people, and you can't always get through to them. We do our best, but being excessively attached to the outcome isn't helpful.
  • Try to explain that his protest is harming others. To harm others isn't fair no matter what point he is trying to prove. Go to your water commission and print out a rate schedule and explain that this behavior is costing others money. Maybe have one of the residents show him their bill. If that doesn't work have the police explain it to him nicely as a neighborhood health check, before one of your neighbors takes him to court or worse.
  • From everything that has been said, it definitely sounds like signs of early dementia. You may want to start shopping around for assisted living care for your grandfather. In an assisted living he would still maintain quite a bit of freedom but would also have a staff keeping an eye on things so that any dangerous actions he might take could be stopped. Suzanne
  • Log on to http://www.bewaterwise.com/. You'll find a water gauge there with three color zones - Blue – good, Yellow - not good, and Red – bad. The needle on this gauge is dropping out of the blue zone and heading into the yellow zone which means that fresh water reserve levels have significantly dropped in Southern California over the past few years. So is the case with various other places in the world. Show this gauge to your grandfather. Perhaps he'll then understand the significance of water conservation. In case he wants to save water after that refer to http://www.bewaterwise.com/tips01.html for water saving tips - both for the indoor and outdoor!
