being an Aussie one of the first words you learn is 'mate'...its just part of our language and even the girls say it so if you ever come over here you had better get use to it ...mate!

Depends on who it is, how they're saying it, or why. It could be nice at times and patronizing in others, or just being a smartass.

You have to watch out for unfamiliar speech patterns. When I first started university in Bristol, I was very startled to be addressed as "my love" in a shop. In my family, that was pretty close relationship stuff - spouses or equivalent and children only. But, by observation, it was used by most muddle aged women in Bristol as routine friendliness. So I tend to hold off and observe if it is part of that person's normal pattern. If it is, let it go by. But, probably like most, I don't like it when people get too friendly too fast. Salesmen who get on first name terms too fast put me off a lot.

Hmmmm it can be a bit startling but it's ok usually. I went to Liverpool for a day just a while ago and everyone calls you babe there! It makes you feel good especially when the ladies say it!
