When your cat bites and then licks, he/she is not biting out of anger or in "attack mode" those bites are love bites. The biting and licking are both ways to show affection and playfulness, they go hand in hand. I hope this helps. Great Question! --Tiff

Yeah it is weird, my cats does it too, but they also do it to one another, to them it is like a kiss or a hug, not something bad, my cats do it while purring!! :)

Tiffytiff (I had to check the spelling) is correct in that sometimes the licking/biting is to show affection, however sometimes it is also a warning to leave them alone as they don't want to have your 'dirty' hands over their newly cleaned fur.

shes sorry

It's love! When I was small, my dad used to bite my cheek and then kiss it. Lol.

I had a cat who did just that! He would bite pretty hard, too. Never break the skin, but it would hurt like crazy. Then the darn cat would start licking. Well, he liked me fine, but I couldn't figure what his motive really was. (The cat was a big neurotic anyway.)

I always thought it meant "Take your hands off me now. I'm serious. It doesn't mean I don't love you, though. It's just that since I can't talk this is how I communicate this to you."

This is called "mouthing." Basically the cat is just putting its scent on you and claiming you. He may also be licking your hand because animals are attracted to salt. If he bites too hard just tap him and tell him no and it should stop after a few times, or at least reduce the pressure of the bite. Just be reassured that the cat loves you and is claiming you and is showing affection and "ownership" (if you will) of you. I heard a quote once that I really love.. "With a dog, the dog will be obediant and do what it can to please his master. With a cat, You're Staff. You're there for the cat, not the other way around"

Unless the tail is waving in an annoyed manner, and the ears may also be rather pinned back, this is a LOVE BITE and part of the scent marking ritual. Sipper, one of our four cats likes to do this when you are trying to have what should be a private moment in the bathroom! Rubs my leg, purr, purr, purr and then a little nip to the leg...OUCH! Whata you doin...Sippy!!!?? "What, I love you, turn on that faucet for me, wouldja?!" No matter how often she does it, I'm never "ready" for the nip! lol

Who knows what's in a cat's mind when they do what they do? All I know is from what I've experienced, there are two different kinds of biting. There's the unmistakable 'Keep away' kind that's usually accompanied with the swishing tail, the fast movements and finishes with the cat fleeing. There's no mistaking what that bite's all about and then there's the lying down quietly, next to your cat, cat rubbing it's head against you, slow movements, purring, all soft and then you get a lick on the hand or the chin followed by a slow controlled nibble. I don't know if they're actually thinking 'I love you' or 'You're my family' or 'You taste good' but I do know it's non-agressive behaviour. Since we'll probably never know, it feels like love to me and I take it to be that way. It's sure not hate.

For the life of me I cant figure it out. Mine has enjoyed "tweeking' my nose and licking my forehwad while purring. I always believed it was some kind of an early cessation from nursing. That is, taken away from its mother too soon.

my cat does the bite/nip and starts licking. the only time he does the nip is when he doesn't want to be pestered and then immediately licks as if to say, 'i'm sorry'. and latter jump on my lap and wants attention.

Kitty bites to play, kitty licks to say they love you.
