You should make sure that they are certified by either NAEYC or CAEYC. These are early childhood agencies which make sure that the center meet certain standards(i.e. sanitary, ratios, educational..etc)

For the California Bay Area: You should check out the site parentsays.com. There are reviews of various chilcare centers around the bay area.

One more thing. You should ask about staff turnover: How long, on average, have the caregivers been working at that center and in the daycare field?

I personally don't have children, as I'm 15, but I can tell you one thing that I would try and do. Talk to some of the caregivers, and maybe follow what they do in the time they have with the children. If you think that is good, it should be the right pre-school.
