The Sabbath is a sign of God's power to create and redeem. A. Sign of Creation. "Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy." "For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it." Exodus 20:8, 11. B. Sign of redemption and sanctification. "Moreover also I gave them MY SABBATHS, to be a sign between me and them, that they might know that I am the Lord that sanctify them." Ezekiel 20:12. God gave the Sabbath as a twofold sign: (1) It is a sign that He created the world in six literal 24-hour days, and (2) it is also a sign of God's mighty power to redeem and sanctify men. Surely every Christian will love the Sabbath as God's precious sign of Creation and redemption (Exodus 31:13, 17; Ezekiel 20:12, 20). It is a great insult to God for people to trample upon His Sabbath. In Isaiah 58:13, 14, God says all who would be blessed must first get their feet off His Sabbath

Any person claiming to know God's motives is quite presumptuous, so I admit in advance my answer - like anyone else's - is not likely to be complete or completely correct. According to Mark 2:27, Jesus "said to them, 'The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.'" I take this passage, along with others indicating that God desires for us to have a good life, to mean that it is good and helpful physically, emotionally and spiritually for people to rest one day out of every seven. I further infer that setting aside regular time to reflect on who God is and what He has done and said is also beneficial to people. (In context, religious leaders were accusing Jesus and his followers of doing too much work on the Sabbath - they were picking grain and, presumably, eating it. Jesus indicated by his words and actions that thier understanding of the Sabbath was flawed.)

The Sabbath was given to the Jewish people as you know, it was given as a sign to the partnership between the Jewish nation to God.

Maybe the question should read----- If folks in the deep part of the jungle never heard of the concept of sabbath does it exist? God if there is such a thing did not institute a Sabbath it was a regular person who had the ability to convince others of some rule clamming it came from the above. He know that one can not disprove the nonexistence of something and then the rules flowed. Beem me up Scottie

God instituted the Sabbath as day of rest because God rested on the Jewish Sabbath, which is Saturday. The BIble clearly states in the 10 Commandments that we're rest to honor God and to ensure that we keep the Sabbath Day "Holy" because "God rested on the seventh day." Here's scriptural support: Deuteronomy 5:12 states the following: "Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy, as the LORD your God has commanded you" (New King James Version). source: http://www.Biblegateway.com I hope this helps to answer your question!

Like every part of the Law, the Sabbath points us to Christ. The Jews had to repeat sacrifices over and over to make sure of their standing with God. This was symbolized by the fact that the priests couldn't sit down in the Temple: their work was never complete. This 'striving' was put to an end on the cross. Hebrews 10 tells us that Jesus' sacrifice ended the striving: "But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God." The Sabbath has been fulfilled like every other part of the Law. Jesus brought completion to a previously never-ending ceremony.

It is often claimed that "God instituted the Sabbath in Eden" because of the connection between the Sabbath and creation in Exodus 20:11. Although God's rest on the seventh day (Genesis 2:3) did foreshadow a future Sabbath law, there is no biblical record of the Sabbath before the children of Israel left the land of Egypt. Nowhere in Scripture is there any hint that Sabbath-keeping was practiced from Adam to Moses. The Word of God makes it quite clear that Sabbath observance was a special sign between God and Israel: "And Moses went up to God, and the Lord called to him from the mountain, saying, "Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel: 'You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles' wings and brought you to Myself. Now therefore, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be a special treasure to Me above all people; for all the earth is Mine'" (Exodus 19:3–5). “Therefore the children of Israel shall keep the Sabbath, to observe the Sabbath throughout their generations as a perpetual covenant. It is a sign between Me and the children of Israel forever; for in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day He rested and was refreshed” (Exodus 31:16–17). The Sabbath was given to Israel, not the church. The Sabbath is still Saturday, not Sunday, and has never been changed. But the Sabbath is part of the Old Testament Law, and Christians are free from the bondage of the Law (Galatians 4:1-26; Romans 6:14).
