You replaced the starter, but did you install it correctly? Doesn't sound like it. What is the sound that you are hearing exactly?

Have U checked the "Teeth" on the "Ring Gear". Is there more than one Starter listed fo this engine? John

Sounds like it could be a worn spot on the ring gear of your flywheel. And just because you have a new starter doesn't mean it works. We've bought a new one and the solenoid was still bad on the new one. Check that first.

Sometimes the flywheel could have missing or worn teeth and your hitting one of these spots but that is rare. A more likely reason could be that Chevy truck starters most of the time comes with a spacer kit to pull the starter away from the teeth when engaged to keep the starter gear from hanging on the flywheel as this can often happen. Normally when you click the starter it engages the gear turns the flywheel and retracts back into the starter. if it hangs unto the flywheel it will free spin. you will hear the brushes spin but nothing will engage. To check this out, the next time it happens take something to tap the outer casing of the starter and tap it a few times then try and start your vehicle if it then starts then your problem is indeed the gear hanging into the flywheel and a spacer which is I believe washers 3/16 thick need to be used between the starter and its mounting bracket. this will move the gear just enough to keep it from hanging.
