Hmmm, let's see, a fourth grader, somewhere between 9 and 10 years old, and a toddler, say 2 or 3 years old. Been there, done that. The great thing about having a older sibling is that the younger child learns things twice as fast and wants to do everything their older sibling does. That's good and bad. But when it comes to games for the two of them to do together, one that comes to mind is hide and seek. Since older sibling knows first hand the limitations of their younger kid brother or sister, it will be a dummed down version, of course, but more fun when taken in that light. This game is great because it forces little minds to think and make snap decisions. It is fun for the older sib, who thinks it will be easy to fool his smaller counterpart, and, who, as he lays waiting to be found...feels a tingling heart-pounding sensation of both fear and anticipation. I can remember the peels of laughter when younger child found older child who feingned great surprise at having been found. Another game is a guessing game, like, "What am I thinking about?" It should be something easy to guess. One person gives clues to the "guesser" about the item or thing they are thinking about untill someone fnally guesses it. Scoring is based on how many guesses it took to guess the answer. If after ten tries the guesser hasn't guessed the answer he gets tickled by the "Thinker". The winner of that rounds is the one to be the "Thinker" of the next round. Or you can just take turns. Fun game for all. But you got to let them guess every once in a while no matter how much fun it is to tickle them. Here's one, you will have to decide whether is is too asvanced or not but mine always surprised me when playing this game. It's called "As you like it" You make a list of words leaving enough spece between them to be able to cut them into separate words. The words should be random thhoughts, words that would convey a variety of subjects, 'person place or thing' kinda thing. Takes time at first but each could write their own ideas down and they are all put into a bowl and chosen one at a time when it is your turn. The first in line chooses a word and then must weave a story using that word. (Younger people have older person read the word but thats all, after a while they catch on real fast and are quite colorful in their interpetations) After the "Orator". has spoken for a set period, approximately 10 to 20 seconds each, the bowl is passed to the next in line who must reach into the bowl and choose a word, using it in the story, which must then revolve around the new word. The game progresses around the room this way until everyone has had a chance to add to the story. Great for rainy days where all you feel like doing is curling up on the sofa. Every one can and likes to participate. It is amazing what their little brain knows at that age. Give this one a try with you participating. It was one of our favorites.

A simple answer to this question is knowing the interests of both children. In order to play with both children the game would have to be simple enough for a child between 2 and 4 to understand and still hold a 9 or 10 year olds attention. Hands on board games like Trouble or Connect Four will work. You could also try a game such as Bingo, Red Light, Green Light or something of that nature. Games that involve the babysitter as a moderator will cut down on agitation and confusion.

Have group play, Ring Around the Rosie, Bean Bag Games(Movement),Painting,Coloring,Dancing,Staking blocks. Don't limit activities because the tot might be too young, They need to explore their sences. I run a mixed age Day Care, the little tots learn fast from the older children. The tots will try to eat the paint, don't worrie just redirect the tot to the paper :) try play doh they love it. 1cp flour,1cp salt, mix food coloring in 3/4 cp water and mix. Have fun :)

When there are two children of different ages you could certainly try model magic similar to playdough though they can also use crayola makers to decorate what they make it sits out and will harden so they can give it to mom or dad or put it on the shelf, bean bag toss, tic-tac toe, hide and seek, you can even do some baking with them kids love when they can help out, red light -green light, you can also make sock puppets, coloring and drawing is good and even a good Disney movie to enjoy for everyone.
