Most scientists estimate that the carrying capacity for the earth's population is around 10,000,000,000.

Honestly, we're using up our resources faster than we're producing them. So really, we're already past our maximum.

Realistically...probably about 1.5 billion to 2 billion people. The Earth's population was pretty stable at about 1.5 billion prior to the discovery of petroleum. Once humanity started extracting petroleum, it had enough energy to enable the "Green Revolution" that allows us to grow enough food to feed about 6-7 billion. However, the agricultural (and hunting and fishing) methods that provide all that food are not sustainable in the long term. http://www.amazon.com/Last-Hours-Ancient-Sunlight-Revised/dp/1400051576

Oil has increased the carrying capacity of the planet from 2.5 billion to approcahing 9 billion. You cant feed 9 billion without oil, and Peak Oil may have already passed us. We have overshot to the tune of 6.5 billion people !!
