If you're hired into a company as a temp. does that mean they can let you go at any time, or do they keep you until they find a permanent position within the company?

Yes. Temporary means just that, they can let you go at any time for any reason or no reason at all. Technically if you are working for a company as a temp, you are not hired.

The temp agency can let you go at anytime and all a company needs to do is make a phone call to the temp agency and tell you they no longer need your sevices.I have never had this happen but have seen it happen far to many times,sometimes with many people not understanding why.

no obligation,they can let you go on your first day without giving you any reason.in fact,i have seen it happened before. on my job,my duty is to recruit new associates.i would do the best i can to make these people the best they can be.after 90 days,i would sign them off and send them to upper management for a complete review/assesment.after that each person is own their own.sadly enough, with 3 discrepancies,i am called to escort you out of the building.life is tough,BE STRONG.

They have no obligation to keep you. They could let you go the same day you started work if they had a good reason. However, if you make a good impression, they "might" ask you to stay on if they have a position that needs filled.
