  • that's not good either. bad for your carburator. or so i've heard.
  • Running out of oil can do unrecoverable amounts of damage to your engine. Running out of gas usually just costs your time and pride.
  • If you have no oil, you will "blow" the engine, throw a rod..or however you want to phrase it. No gas? No go. Either way, you're probably going to be walking.
  • If you have no oil, the damage is because the parts grind against eachother, eventually more-or-less locking together. Gasoline is only the fuel. Running out of it isn't *good* for the car, because the last few attempts to fire a cylinder will probably misfire and be hard on it, but it's not something that will completely destroy your engine. It will just leave you stranded on the side of the road until you get more gasoline. once you have more, you can start your car and go, though it might take a few tries. Compare it to cooking fried eggs with no oil (your eggs stick to the pan and get burned and ruined) or cooking with no heat (you get no food).
  • No oil and your car is kaput pretty much permanently. No gas and your car is kaput until you fill it up. Speaking from a fool who has run out of gas, the car pretty much just "dies" on the spot, but was good as new once I gave it some juice.
  • Back in the days of carburators it was said that engine would run lean (therefore hot) and could be damaged (pinging, rings?) by running it out of gas. I doubted this in 1956, but regardless, there is no such risk today. With fuel injection and computer controlled ignition they stop all at once. I see now that a whole bunch of ABers have answered - will post anyway, :0
  • That used to be true, Swordsman, but cars today will simply shut off when your oil level is too low, thus sparing the engine damage. And they usually warn you when your oil or gas is too low. But, if you run out of gas,...you just stop.
  • Well you're not really going to hurt your car, because if you run out of gas, the car stops working. Hard to do damage to an engine that doesn't do any work. If you're driving and run out of gas, your car will simply die as if you had turned the key.
  • Running out of gas has no ill effects on your car, apart from the obvious that it stops moving. There is an old wives tale that it will screw up your fuel filter, but it doesn't. I will admit, it is pretty embarrassing.
  • okay. i forgive you.
  • Your car will stop!!
