  • good question, I know that from 100 miles away travelling through the atmosphere at standard temperature and condition, the decibel rating was calculated to be 180 dB, although not officially measured, it is louder than the estimated value for the Tsar Bomba (largest ever detonated nucleur device, yielded 50 Mt) I have been trying to find the time to do the calculations to determine the precise value for the sound of the eruption at ground zero, but so far to no avail.
  • The explosion of Mount Tambora, on Sumbawa island, Indonesia in 1815 was heard clearly 2,600 km (1,600 mi) away and has been called the loudest sound ever heard by humans. It had roughly four times the energy of the 1883 Krakatoa eruption. The shock waves circled the globe several times but this part might not be considered a “sound”.
