Check your lease. If the lease you signed, specifically mentions carpet replacement and how its paid, then its probably legal. if not, contact an attorney. landlords can be great or they can be a pain in the _____! Also, I believe the last tenants probably had a clause, in their lease and money to back it, that was for this purpose. I hate to use this phrase again, but the landlord may be "double-dipping". taking money from you and taking maintenance deposit money from the previous tenant, for the same purpose. read your lease. you may need an attorneys advice. I would not pay, until my attorney says...ok. good luck
