Yes, but via official channels, not by going into the playground and trying to sort it out, good as that might sometimes seem.

I would say yes, but it also depends on the type of "picking."

If they were getting physical I think I would have to interfere. If it were name calling or some other form of bullying I would see it as an opportunity to teach my child the art of handling him/her self.

Of course you should. Now, the bullying is always questionable. Try to get the whole story though. Ask your 4th grader. Then, consider asking other parents in the class of the child. No child should deal on their own. Set aside any" It will toughen him/her up". it can. I know, it CAN. Other times, it leaves your child in fear. Don't think of it as babying your child. You are letting them know you're always there for them! -Kava

No, what you do is you get the kids older brother or sister (if they dont have one, just find a kid who will do it) and have them go upto the kid and hassle the hell out of him. The kids going to get bagged out by the other kids if his parents interfere, but if you get there sibling to do it they'll be shitting themselves. Now that i think of it, its better to get a random kid to do it, so if it comes back to you via the other kids parents you dont have another son or daughter =).

I tried interfering but I was the first adult to get his ass kicked by seven 4th graders with dented lunch boxes.

It should be reported to the teacher and the principal. There are strict anti-bullying rules in the local school system.
