  • It doesn't say in the bible you can't be left handed
  • Im not saying im homophobic but im just wondering how this holds true? Can you please explain? I beleive the number one agrument agaist gays refers to the bible, and like the last person said I agree I dont recall anything in the bible saying you can't be left handed....???
  • Utter nonsense!
  • How many left-handed children over the years were forced to use their right hands in school? Then criticized for not being able to write as well? One schoolteaching nun even enlisted the rest of the class to "correct" a left-handed boy every time he was caught using that hand. Sister told the class that the right side was the angels' side, and the left side was the devil's. She backed this up with scriptural teaching, that Christ had said the saved sheep would be placed on the right, and the lost goats would be placed on the left. (Matthew 25:23) Christ is depicted as sitting at the right hand of the father. (Acts 2:33) Sitting at the right hand, or being touched with the right hand, is traditionally thought of as the position of favor. (Genesis 48:17) So people had reason to use the Bible to condemn left-handed people. [sarcasm]Left-handers are clearly a minority. The world and society are set up for right handed people. Getting left-handers to change their natural inclination and use the "correct" side would only be doing them a favor, since they would no longer have to fight the tide. Certainly being required to accomodate left-handers presents an inconvenience. Making sure there are left-handed scissors available. Changing the construction of school desks so that they are not biased toward right-handed students. Taking extra time to teach left-handed students to position their paper in a way that would make it more comfortable for them to write. Why should the world change to accomodate a minority?[/sarcasm] Even every day langauge represents a bias toward the right. It is no accident that "sinister" comes from a word meaning left-handed. And there are STILL parts of the world to day where one can be arrested for using the left hand in public. A woman from another country saw me writing with my left hand and got very angry, as if I'd been sadly neglected. "They didn't correct that when you were little? In my country, they correct that." Gay, left-handed, female, ethnic minority, any one of those can be preached against using Biblical or religious arguments. I rest my case.
  • O.K. I am going to assume by the tone of your question that you are in fact, gay. First I'll answer your 2nd question. No! I dont. Now I'll comment on your first question. To start with, I do not fear YOU. Your use of the word "Homophobic" is incorrect. I do not not call you "Heterophobic", although I think you probably FEAR my heterosexuality more than I FEAR your homosexuality. I am concerned however about the agenda your community seeks to force upon society. As silly as I think your example is, o.k. Being left handed is a physical condition, being gay is not. And dont go comparing your plight to race either. Apples and oranges my friend. I expect no less than -50 points on this one!!!!!
  • Love bird. I meant no disrespect to you. I too, had a brother who was gay, we lost him to AIDS several years back. I love my brother. He was not shunned in any way by our family, he was accepted as always! I miss him!. I saw many of his friends die. My views on this matter are never against the individual person. I am not a Christian so I dont really believe in "sin". I do believe in right and wrong.(that is not a specific reference to this issue.)I do not want to deny anybody there human rights. I do worry about the state of the family. I dont blame Marriage for the divorce rate. I think that marriage between a man a woman the ideal situation to raise children. I blame the people who didnt make the marriage work. When I said my friend I was sincere. I know the tone of my answer was coarse, I wanted you to know it wasnt personal. I do not like the name Homophobic. I think its more of a way of shifting the onus on me. For you to be right, I have to be wrong. Good luck in your Marriage and I wish you well! P.S. I cant rate, So I really dont care about my own ratings!!!!!!!!!!!
  • They almost certainly don't realise that. But then again, they don't even realise that they are speaking about someone ELSE'S life, so it's really not saying much. Homophobes are among the most disgusting groups of people still existing within Western Society. ***** For those of you who justify it with the Bible, keep in mind that it COMMANDS you to kill homosexuals on sight, and that their deaths is their own fault not yours. To hold back the sword against God's will is a very nasty sin as well. ***** Homophobes should do society a favour and seclude themselves very far away where they can be as bigoted and cruel as they wish. (And before any of you start, I'm not actually gay, I just believe that Human Rights are quite a noble cause to fight for) Articles -1-, -2-, -3-, 5, 7, -12-, 18, 21, 22, 25, 26, -29-, -30-, Universal Declaration of Human Rights. http://www.un.org/Overview/rights.html If you ACT on your homophobia and live in a country that's a member of the UN (http://www.un.org/members/list.shtml <- Check here), you are committing a human rights violation. Homophobia (when ACTED on) is unjustifiable, it is unequivocally illegal and immoral, it is inhuman. If you do anything to limit the human rights set forth in the above links, you are disgusting and deserve to be punished quite severely. Read the human rights and obey them or mark yourself criminal within UN member countries (http://www.un.org/members/list.shtml <- Check here).
  • I've posted quite a bit of gay-rights support stuff in the last 48 hours ... it seems like we have an epidemic of homophobia right now on AB. This stuff tends to come in waves, I've noticed. I find I keep making the same points over and over again, it's rather repetitive and inefficient. So here's a more organized list of my favorite arguments AGAINST oppression, marginalization, and abuse of gay/lesbian/bisexual people. 1.- The basis for right and wrong is the interconnectedness of all life. What I do affects others, and vice versa. I'm not separate from others. The way to tell whether or not something is wrong or right is to develop the "muscle" of compassion sufficiently so that you can feel the suffering of others, and to develop the muscle of wisdom sufficiently so that you can see the totality of a situation and make appropriate choices that fulfill the whole. The basis of morality is NOT what scripture says, or what tradition says, or what any authority says, or what "everybody knows", or even what God told you last night during prayer. None of that is a sound basis for knowing right from wrong. Those things may be temporarily helpful while you're trying to locate your moral compass, but if those "crutches" are continued too long, the true capacity to understand moral values fails to develop or atrophies. 2.- The basic approach to determining "wrong action" is "that which is not forbidden is permitted". That is, the burden is on those who would declare something a sin. This is simple logic: if someone asks me to prove that it's NOT a sin to wave my hand left-to-right, I'm stuck. They may have some scriptural passage which suggests it's a sin, and there's nothing I can do to "disprove" the passage! The only sensible approach is to place the burden of proof on those who wish to declare it a sin... they need to demonstrate that the action is harmful, and that the harm is great enough to outweigh my right to wave my hands any way I please. In general, those who oppose gay rights consistently fail to measure up on this test: they're unable to show that homosexuality is wrong, EXCEPT by citing passages in scripture. That's not moral thinking, that's a fallacy called "argument from authority". The book alone is not adequate, you must have some coherent framework for determining right from wrong, or what you have is just arbitrary and capricious. If you can't connect it to a coherent understanding of the basis for moral judgment, you ain't got squat. 3.- Once the RIGHT of gays to live unhindered is established, another moral imperative enters the scene: because we're all interconnected, nobody gets to escape their relationship to the rest of humanity. I'm not separate from a child starving in India, nor am I separate from violence done to nuns in Africa, nor am I separate from discrimination against gays in San Francisco -- it's ALL "my business". Now, as a practical matter, there's a limit to what any individual can take on. But as a matter of principle, I and ALL humans are obliged to be "on the side" of defending the rights of all humans... that's the only way I can be coherent in my relationship to the whole of humanity. Because of this positive OBLIGATION to be "for others", it's actually a "sin" of sorts to secretly begrudge them their rights. That means I don't get to hide out behind some sort of shifty-eyed position like "well, it's ok for them but I really don't support it". Grudging tolerance is simply covert hostility: either you support the rights and freedom of others, or you withhold that support and sneak around with some complex rationalization, or you attack. I've seen a lot of that middle option on Answerbag, which is why it earned a mention here. So here's what I say to someone who thinks they care about morality: get on the right side of this issue. It is not too late to wake up and say "ok, I was wrong", and be redeemed in the most fundamental sense of the word -- to restore your relationship to the Whole -- to all of life, to all of humanity, including those who are not like you.
  • You make an interesting point. I wonder how many homophobics really realize this. In the past, I have heard horror stories about teachers and those in authority attempting to "correct" left-handed children. I think these people were HORRIBLE. When properly done, left-handed writing is a mirror image to that of the right-hander, making the teaching process confusing (if right-handed) for the teacher of a left-handed student. The result is that many left-handed people learn to write with their hand curled around the pen so that it can meet the paper at the same angle as the right hander, rather than simply tilt the paper the opposite way. Once this habit is formed, it is difficult to break. This curling of the hand results in the heel of the palm being placed behind the writing, forcing the writer to lift it off the paper and making the grip even more awkward. In addition, constantly lifting and replacing the hand over fresh ink often causes SMUDGING, causing problems for many left-handed students, especially in exam situations. When I was 19 I worked as a waitress and another waitress I worked with had the most GOD-AWFUL right-handed handwriting, and one day I asked her why her handwriting was so bad. She said it was because she was really left-handed, but when she was a child her teachers "corrected" her handedness and the way she wrote now was the best she could do--a left-handed person, forced to write right-handed. Shudder! Being left-handed myself, I am just so thankful that I never had to be subjected to this kind of torture. That's right, I said torture. If you've always been right-handed, then you don't know what the world is really like for left-handed people. A 1998 study suggested that only approximately 7 to 10 percent of the adult population is left-handed. This is why many tools and devices are designed to be comfortably used with the right hand. For example: Scissors are arranged so that the line being cut along can be seen by a right-handed user, but is obscured to a left-handed user. Also, the handles are often molded in a way that is difficult for a left-hander to hold. A computer mouse is made to fit the right hand better. Many computer installations have the mouse placed on the right side, making it awkward for left handers to use without moving the mouse to the other side of the keyboard, although some mouse drivers and operating systems allow the user to reconfigure the mouse buttons to reverse their functions. The lack of left-handed tools and machines in many workplaces is not only a nuisance to many left-handers, but has actually placed them in danger. One example is the band saw, whose standard design is convenient for right-handers but forces left-handers to pass their arms dangerously close to the cutting blade with every pass of the saw. Chain saws are also designed for right-handers. The majority of firearms are designed for right-handed shooters, with the operating handle, magazine release, and/or safety mechanisms set up for manipulation by the right hand, and fired cartridge cases ejected to the right. Also, scopes and sights may be mounted in such a way as to require the shooter to place the rifle against his or her right shoulder. A left-handed shooter must either purchase a left-handed firearm (which are manufactured in smaller numbers and are generally more expensive and/or harder to obtain), shoot a right-handed gun left-handed (which presents certain difficulties, such as the controls being improperly located for them or shell cases being ejected towards their body), or learn to shoot right-handed (which may pose additional problems). Hopefully, no one still thinks it's wrong or a sin to be left-handed. I'm proud to be left-handed. And I just learned that my four year old grandson is left-handed. :)
  • my brother, who is left-handed, went through some of this as well. there was even one year in elementary school where our school picture settings were of all students sitting at a desk with a piece of paper holding a pencil....and the left-handed student were forced to pose holding the pencils with their right hands. even then, I thought that was ridiculous. our parents were pissed. I've heard many stories of childen's handedness has been "corrected" or was attempted to be. and that causes struggles that last a lifetime.
  • Wow, I wish I could join the conversation, Unfortunately I cannot use the comment box. Thank you all for your comments. I will try to answer the questions posed. On the agenda issue. I used the word "agenda" to describe various social activity that has taken place or that is trying to be enacted. Alternative lifestyles is now on the curriculum at my child's elementary school. The thought police are now telling me my morals are criminal(Twhupfold)!. I stand by my statement that being gay is not a physical condition. It cannot be identified by physical traits. You know a crippled person is crippled by the state of their physical being. You cant see homosexuality with an X-ray. Heterosexuality is not a physical condition either. Anyway, back to the "agenda". Whatever a specific group seeks to gain through social change, either through legislation or common thought, could be referred to as an agenda. It isnt exclusive to the "Gay rights" advocates. Furthermore, an agenda is not always a bad thing. Martin Luther King had an agenda, I dont think he would have taken offense to the term. I would also like to point out that I have not attacked anyone, or used name calling in any of my answers. I have tried to be as open and honest as possible. I am answering from the point of view the questions ask for, as a "homophobic". In return, I have been called closed minded, homophobic, hater and criminal. I would like to thank Love bird for her question, and if anyonr has anymore questions, Please ask! I wish you all well
  • Please.........I am a Gay, Left-Handed Atheist. With that line of thinking, I can't get any more Sinful than that! LOL.
  • I'm left handed and a gay female....i'm sure the bigots would have a field day with me :) When i went to primary school not too long ago 16 yrs ago my hand was strapped behind my back and i was instructed to write the proper way... All the left handed were also seated together LOL and not allowed to participate in arts and crafts or sports...Bizarre really
  • Magenta i've heard this arguement before. So i'm black. If a white man told me these things trying to show me I was wrong I would ask him what is his bases for this belief because I really don't see one. If you find in the bible where it says by being black I am a sinner then let me know and i'll bleach my skin right away.
  • everything's a sin according to the bible
  • I am all for their rights but I will not condone nor condemn such behavior though.
  • I'm certain that's not in the bible if you can find it then let me know....and the bible is not just some book you can ignore I'm not the only one with a bible you can get the everywhere and they all say the same thing.... but the different viewpoints you speak of shouldn't be...the bible clearly has one meaning and is not open to private interpretations Yes there is a narrow box that Gods followers should fit in...You can't just do and believe anything you want and expect to make it to heaven God is not cruel or unforgiving he is merciful and forgiving but you can't be forgiven if your not trying to get forgivness Yes I try my best to follow everything the bible says and it says nothing supporting slavery or saying it's ok
  • POSTED AS AN ANSWER BECAUSE IT WOULDN'T COME IN AS A COMMENT: REACTION TO THE FIRST ANSWER I POSTED HERE, WHERE BBP URGES ALL TO VISIT THE CHURCH OF CHRIST BECAUSE HE'S RIGHT AND EVERY ONE ELSE IS WRONG: BBP, I thought you said several times you were done here....? Just because you want to go away in a huff doesn't mean the rest aren't welcome to comment. It's my thread. I say so. - Note to the public, many of my relatives belong to the "church of Christ," among them ministers. They are NOTORIOUS for the thinking of "we're the only ones right;" in fact "you go to Heaven ONLY if you are a member of the church of Christ" is an official church doctrine. Baptists, Methodists, Catholics, Lutherans... they're all going to hell because their church has the wrong name. Speaking of names: some branches deliberately don't capitalize "church," because they don't want to make it look like THEY are naming their church, which logic escapes me. I've sat in on those so-called Bible studies where they spend hours debating such world-shattering subjects as whether to take the Lord's supper from one cup or from many... who cares? What a waste of time! They don't believe in instrumental music during worship since it doesn't specifically say anywhere that Christ or His disciples played instruments. Come to think of it they don't believe in much, including salvation by grace. They may SAY they believe in that, but they're still looking for God to thunk them with a bolt of lightning for the slightest sin. Christ talked about "straining out a gnat while swallowing a camel," and indeed some members of this so-called church do exactly that by debating whether it's "strain *at* a gnat" or strain *out* a gnat." And of course the Bible also instructs us not to judge others... but I was sternly rebuked by my coC relatives for pointing that out. There is, by the way, an online support group for past members of the coC. - Carry on, all. And God bless.
  • Gay people should have basic human rights because they are human, not because they are gay. They also do not and never should have the right to change our God given definition of marriage. Whether the same arguments are used against left-handed people is irrelevant. It is not a sin to be a homosexual. It is a sin to have homosexual sex. Sex, and marriage, is for a man and his wife, and that is all.
  • I tell my left-handed hubby that he's a sinner everyday :) Seriously though, my definition of a sin may vary from the majority. I don't think something is a sin unless it is harmful to someone (as in assault, theft, lying, etc. etc). Being homosexual is in no way, shape or form "harmful" to others. Sure you'll get the fanatics who'll cry about how it's immoral and the downfall of marriage and yada, yada. I am of the opinion that homosexuality is a biological trait, just like homosexuality. There are several studies that indicate this as well. Those who state that homosexuality is ok, "as long as they don't have sex", give me a break!!! Those are the same people who want to be able to claim that sex itself is immoral and you should be only having sex for procreation (because that is the argument they will use). I would then ask them how many times they used birth control. People seem to have to have some group to persecute, call it ignorance or whatever but I think society wants a scapegoat. Let's look at the groups that have been persecuted over the years in just American History: Native Americans, African Americans, Irish Americans, Germans, Japanese, Jews, Muslims, the list goes on and on. The problem now is that it is no longer 'ok' to discriminate against these groups as they are protected by law (i.e Hate crimes, Equal Employment, housing etc). SO...what can people pick on? Your sexuality of course, as many believe people are actively making that choice. The government does not help either, many cities do not have hate crime laws that include acts against homosexuals as hate crimes, housing laws don't spell out protection for them either. People are homophobic because they are just prejudiced and bigots anyway but they know they can't go around talking about hating other races or religions so they now can go on and on about "those gays". It's just a very sick and sad part of our society that is not going to improve until the government takes care of it's end.
  • This debate is beyond tired. I'm a white guy, and I have a white wife. That means that if I want a black or Asian baby, I'm pretty-much out of luck, right? I can easily say that I can't help who I am attracted to, but pursuing that attraction comes with both benefits and consequences, and one of the consequences is that I can't have black or Asian babies. I'm mature enough and realistic enough to accept this. For this reason, I don't think gays should be allowed to adopt. Being in a gay relationship means you can't have children, save for a sperm donor or a surrogate mother. That's just common sense. The problem isn't really so much an issue of "gays and those that oppose them" as much as it's a mentality in society that no one should ever be told "no" for the things they want, regardless of what reality presents to them. For this reason, we now have a new generation of laggards and do-nothings called 'the entitlement generation,' a group that believes they should have everything, whether they've earned it or not. This is why parents are being sued by their children for insufficient allowance, why parents are being accused of child abuse for yelling at mouthy children, and why educational requirements for college degrees are being perpetually lowered. No one can accept that everything in life has both benefits and consequences. Marriage was originally a religious rite that fell under government regulation back in a time when religion ruled governments. Having a government that assures freedom of religion doesn't mean that government should define the religious rite of marriage. In my opinion, I think the government should offer a legally-parallel union, equivolent in legal status to marriage, and let the religions individually determine marriages themselves. Several efforts in this direction have already been made, and many more are being made. If gays can acquire the same legal status with a 'civil union,' then I see no need to press the government to redefine marriage. You don't get everything you want in life, and life isn't fair. It never has been, and it never will be. In order for someone to get their way in anything, someone else has to be denied theirs. Again, that's just the reality of things.
  • i was left handed, from the judicious use of sadistic measures.. my left hand became stupid when it came to writting, i learned how to right with my right hand... i learned how to do everything with my right hand, and i can do everything but write with my left hand... so will i HATE to this day the teachersthat tortured me, i am now ambidextrous. the sin? why they had to make me right handed!
  • FOR THE RECORD: Nowhere in my original question was I bringing up a debate whether or not it is a sin to practice homosexuality, or whether the definition of marriage should include same-sex couples. I was comparing homophobia to similar past (and in some cases present) thinking against left-handed people. I will state here my views on the subject of homosexuality, which up until now I have NOT stated, since whether homosexuality is a sin or not concerns me less than the outright hate I'm seeing on the topic. And please remember, this is how I understand it, not how I expect YOU to understand it, unless you study and come to the same conclusions I did. I hope I don't offend or anger anyone, on either side of the debate. 1. Do I believe people are born homosexual? I sincerely don't know. 2. Is there a difference between being homosexual and living a homosexual lifestyle? I think so. 3. Do I understand the Bible to teach against the practice of homosexuality? Is it against God's intention, which is what I understand to be the definiton of sin? Yes, as I currently interpret the Scriptures. And I once interpreted them differently, as a member of the Metropolitan Community Church. 4. Does my interpretation of the Bible mean I should hate or condemn anyone? No, my interpretation of the Bible shows me exactly the opposite. I am no better or worse than anyone else. I have no right to judge and condemn, nor should I be judged by anyone but the Lord. 5. Does my belief that homosexuality is not God's will mean that gays should be denied certain rights, not allowed around children, forbidden to work at certain occupations, etc? No, or else no one who has *ever* committed sin should be allowed those rights. Notice I didn't say "committed A sin," but committed sin." I believe sin to be a state of being, not a single act. And every person ever born, except One, has shown himself/herself to be in that state of being. 6. Do I believe gay people can be saved and continue to be gay? Sure. We are saved by grace, not by works. I hope everyone will come to Christ, not to someone else's explanation of Him but to Christ Himself, and accept the gift of salvation He gave us with His blood. Then let Him work out with you, on an individual level, what needs to be improved on. I bear no ill will toward anyone, but I do find hate and intolerance, well, hateful and intolerable. I'd rather be in the company of 100 gays and/or atheists than in the company of one religious ultraconservative. In fact, study will show that the execution of Christ was orchestrated not by the fringes of society, the thieves and prostitutes He hung out with, but by the religious leaders of the day. And who did Christ have stronger words of condemnation for?
  • I am a gay female and I use both hands at all times possible. So to all homophobs, are you jealous, that we are beautiful and u can't have us. If that's not the problem, then what is?
  • WTF?! i am left-handed and i didn't know it was a SIN. oh yeah, i'm going to hell b/c i'm left-handed.
  • very true, never really thought of that.
